Back

The FIVE W's On How Christians Should "Rebuke' In this video, I discuss the subject of "rebuke" as follows: "REBUKE" (Appears about 30 times in KJV/NAS) -Greek: Epitimao -to show honour to, to honour; 2. to raise the price of; 3. to adjudge, award, in the sense of merited penalty; 4. to tax with fault, rate, chide, rebuke, reprove, censure severely; a. to admonish or charge sharply -Rebuke IS NOT criticism or commentary 1) WHO can rebuke/be rebuked? - Any brother/sister; that is, one who has godly love and concern for the individual in sin, and those potentially or actually affected by it. You should NOT rebuke out of pride or anger. 2) WHAT to rebuke about? - You should confront a brother/sister regarding observed or otherwise confirmed sin/impropriety. Rebuke IS NOT personal attacks. You should NOT attempt to rebuke on hearsay and bad information. Do your research, starting with simply ASKING the persons involved (if possible) about the issue. 3) WHEN to rebuke? - When sin or it's effects are observed or otherwise confirmed. 4) WHERE/HOW to rebuke? - First one on one. If sin is public, rebuke openly depending upon circumstances. 5) WHY rebuke? - The goal of rebuke is reconciliation and love. If you don't let the brother/sister you are rebuking know that you love them, then it's not rebuke. DANGERS OF FAILING TO REBUKE: -Sin increases in it's destructive effects. -You sin by failing to act (James 4:17 Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn't do it, sins.) DANGERS OF FAILING TO REBUKE PROPERLY: -Risk alienating a brother or sister (loss of trust; respect) -Risk creating dissension (proper conflict management) APPLICABLE PASSAGES: Mat 18:15-18; Luke 17:3; 1 Tim 5:1; 1 Tim 5:20; 2 Tim 4:2 ("Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long suffering and doctrine."); Rev 3:19 additional tags:
