Back前田日明がこの試合を見て長州の顔面蹴りを決意した。 前田日明は、1987年頃に天龍が輪島大士の顔面を普通のリングシューズにも関わらず容赦なく蹴っていたこと、それでも立ち上がる輪島、さらに容赦なく蹴っていた天龍の姿に衝撃を受けた。天龍自身はこの行為について「たとえ横綱だった人間でも簡単に出来るほどプロレスは甘くないということ。それから、やっぱり横綱だった人間はヤワじゃないんだよということ。この二つを皆に知ってほしかったからやったんだ」
