Wrist Arthroscopy

Back

This is a short clip that was taken during my wrist arthroscopy on March 16th, 2006. Wrist arthroscopy is an outpatient surgical procedure used to diagnose and treat problems inside the wrist. Three or four small incisions, usually less than a half-inch long, are made, and an instrument called an arthroscope, which is smaller than the diameter of a pencil, is inserted. The arthroscope contains a small lens, a miniature camera and a lighting system, enabling an orthopedic doctor to look directly inside. Tiny probes, forceps, knives and shavers can then be inserted into the wrist and may be able to be used to correct some probems. In this particular clip, I believe that a shaver is being used on the triangular fibrocartilage in my right wrist, as well as on some scar tissue. You can also see a small tear/hole. Fascinating, huh? Oh the joy of having slipped and fallen IN a hospital. The irony is just too much to handle. Thankfully, the damage wasn't as extensive as was originally thought, and I'm feeling relatively okay for the time being. - Alex
