7.9 Earthquake Hits Peru Killing Over 50; Tsunamis Feared

Back

At least 50 people died Wednesday night when a 7.9 magnitude earthquake struck coastal Peru at 6:40 p.m. local time. Tsunami warnings were initially issued to the coasts of Peru, Chile, Ecuador, Colombia, Costa Rica and Panama after the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center detected a tsunami of an undetermined size. A tsunami watch was issued for the rest of Central America and Mexico as well as a tsunami advisory for Hawaii. 17 of the deaths were caused by the collapse of a church in the city of Ica. Hundreds of workers were evacuated from Lima office buildings after the quake struck and remained outside, fearing aftershocks. Callers to Peru's main news radio station, Radioprogramas, said parts of several cities in southern Peru had been hit with widespread blackouts and also reported homes in poor neighborhoods in Chincha and Cerro Azul had collapsed. Initially the death toll was reported to be in the teens, but as the night wore on and fires blazed in several areas, the amount of lives lost became obviously greater.
