I was born in D and spent my childhood there. We left in 1972 and never went back. I gather that it's fairly safe in downtown (daytime) but once out of downtown the neighborhoods are dangerous. Try Google Maps - street view to get an idea. Also search for more videos.

Detroit is a fantastic city; rich with history, culture, and beautiful people. The video seems to be a representation of someone driving through Detroit for the first time afraid to get out of their car. They're missing out.

They say Detroit is violent and dangerous but is the violence more likely "criminals killing each other" than random. I mean are you in constant danger to get shot, mugged or whatever when walking on the ruthless streets of Detroit. I am european and never been to Detroit but I like "rough" cities like Berlin(Yeah, Detroit is also rough) provided that they are safe. It might be exciting to visit in Detroit and see a hockey match in Joe Louis Arena(Red Wings vs. Blackhawks, sounds great =))
