Based on the length of their kimono sleeves and Obi (belt), etc., I think they are Maiko (i.e. not Geisha yet). And probably they are about 16 or 17 year-old. I like Kimono (dress), they are so beautiful...

Okay,Okay! Since nobody else is gonna say it, I guess I'll just say it: "Japanese people were put on this earth for our comical amusement and sexual pleasure. That's why being a Geisha is a top-paying profession from us gaijin folk!" There, ya' happy now?

Oops, sorry. What they're carrying are actually called kinchaku kago, I think, which have a basket-weave bottom and a drawstring top. Different from furoshiki.

They're great, aren't they? I think what they're carrying are called furoshiki, which are just squares of silk or cotton that they fold in different ways to make different styles of handbags. They also use furoshiki to wrap presents, packages, etc. And they're good for the environment because they reuse them.

ikinda doubt they are tourists. Some geisha have painted their lips full. it depends on the trend.

All I can think about while watching this is how fast I would be flat on the pavement if I had to wear those shoes O.o

Those girls as clearly FAIKO - tourists dressed up as maiko-san for the day. Gion maiko don't paint their lips almost in full if they are wearing junior kanzashi and the wareshinobu!

their fabric bags are so pretty. shoulder bags and backpacks can be so uncomfortable. i think i'll carry pretty fabric bags like these more often.

Just remember to make a difference beetween "geishas" and "geisha girls". First one is better, second one is bad for geisha reputation.
